Syagit

Image
I went to Syagit 2012 last night, and I only have one non-blurry picture to show for it:          For those who don't know, syagit is "scream" in Bisaya. I don't mean to say that to "syagit" is to "scream in Bisaya." The Tagalog counterpart of syagit is sigaw, and its English counterpart is yell, or shout. You get the picture.          But that's not important. Syagit 2012, the event, is a fiesta away from home for people who are from Cagayan de Oro and are now in Manila. It happens every August, during the actual fiesta of CDO. And it's always organized by UP Kagayhaan, which is this org in UP for people from CDO. Pretty specific, right?          On the plane coming here I sat next to this girl named Christine (or is it Khristine, or Karen) and we actually spent the whole flight talking. (It was the first time I'd ever had a real conversation with a stranger o...

a normal day

Image
I really haven't been in the mood to write lately. I don't know if it's some brain chemistry thing associated with the weather (they say cold weather causes a chemical imbalance in the brain, making people sadder), but I've just lost the urge to type out the entire proceedings of my day for all the strangers on the Internetz to see. However, upon the prodding of certain friends (hi, Rap and Andy), I. Will. Write. After all, the show must go on, and the uncreative blogger must feign creativity. I don't really know what's in it for you, dear reader, but in writing this, I supposedly benefit from the theraputic nature of blogging. And then there's that other thing about my future grandchildren finding this blog and saying, "Oh look, Grandma wrote that!" (Ugh. How creepy does that sound? Hello, grandkids. Ack! So very creepy.) But what exactly do YOU benefit from reading this? You will have wasted around five minutes of your time, that's what. Fi...

University of the Philippines Diliman

Image
If you are, or have ever been, a high school student in the Philippines, I'm assuming that you know about the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines, more commonly known as UPD. Because if you are/have ever been in high school, and you  don't  know about this university, then you should be ashamed of yourself. Go curl up in a corner and listen to My Chemical Romance and cry. I am ashamed of you.*      Fortunately, being the good soul that I am, I will provide you a little background about the place. Be grateful that somebody actually had the decency to relieve you of your ignorance and blindness. Yeah, that's right. Just call me The Illuminator.** And, yes, you are forgiven.     UP Diliman is the Holy Grail of universities here in the Philippines. Its entrance exam, the UPCAT, is the hardest to pass (I think it's because of the right-minus-wrong system). Among all the UP campuses in the country, the Di...

Noynoy's Rally, Cagayan de Oro City

Image
The title pretty much sums this post up! Noynoy Aquino's rally started around five o'clock in the Divisoria kiosk. My family didn't go until six because my mom gets out of work six-ish. And we all dressed up in yellow, complete with matching Mar Roxas ballers (because we didn’t have a Noynoy one) and camera phones for snapping pictures to post on blogs, like any die-hard supporter. Anyway, when we got there, the place was packed - it was a sea of people surrounding the kiosk, and there were even more people behind the kiosk, and even more people behind the people! (If I'm not making sense, that's because I haven't had breakfast yet.) We settled with this comfy little spot in the crowd. It was comfy enough that we could see both the speaker and the image of the speaker projected onto this white screen. Ralph Recto was the speaker when we got there. I must take time to mention his ballers, which I found quite amusing because not only do they say "I ♥ Ralph...

look at all the people

"In Kong Hua, you're a big fish in a little pond. In ADMU, you'll be a tiny fish in an ocean." - Mom In many ways, Kong Hua School is indeed a little pond . Population-wise, each level has more or less a hundred students. Multiply that by four and you've got roughly five hundred students in the whole high school, as opposed to Xavier University High School's whopping student population of... Well, I'd rather not do the math. I don't want to risk getting any wrong information published online again! (lame reference to: old article about Noynoy Aquino's girlfriend ) Anyway, in my school, everybody knows everybody. It's literally a world without strangers - and that's one of the things I love most about it! The faces I see as I walk through the hallways, those are the same faces I've been seeing around for more than thirteen years of my life (nope, I've never, ever transferred schools). Sure, classmates and schoolmates come and go, but...

how i reached a decision

So this was my plan. It was so clear to me back then: If I don't pass the UPCAT, I'm going to XU. As for my choice of course, it was a toss-up between Computer Science and Biology. For me, getting to that point where I had only two courses to choose from was already a big accomplishment, considering that my previous list of course choices was anything but short. I had so many plans: take Political Science, proceed to Law and become a lawyer. Take something in communications like Journalism or MassCom and work in the advertising biz. I even considered going to Bigfoot Studios in Cebu and taking up Filmography! Filmography!!! My parents played a big role in my indecision. Being the awesome people that they are, they told me that they'd support me whichever school I went to, whichever course I decided to pick. There was no one around to tell me, "No you can't study in Manila," or, "You have no future in that course." In fact, not one little chuckle ...
