anime and feminism

Image
WARNING: This post contains stuff that you probably will not be interested in unless you 1.) Watch Ouran High School Host Club and 2.) like half-baked feminist analyses of pop culture. Why why why WHY do I always get the urge to write a blog post just when I'm about to work on something important. I've got a Physiology mini-thesis review of related literature waiting to materialize in the adjacent browser tab, and it's due on Monday already, but DEAR LORD am I fired up and ready to write something completely unrelated on my blog. Maybe it's the coffee float I just ingested. I got if from Jolibee for an extra twenty five bucks, and its resemblance, in terms of taste, to Kopiko instant coffee is unignorable. Anyway, I'll stop the rambling and proceed with that thing that got me fired up in the first place - no, not coffee (well, it's partially that), but Ouran High School Host Club. If you are either Jules or Rap, I know what you're thinking: How unchar...

Question of the Day: Would you bend down for Peter Dinklage?

Image
I get asked a lot of interesting questions by friends and family. Just kidding. I don't. Today though I got a pretty interesting one from a friend, and I thought I'd share my two cents on the matter. If you were to have your picture taken with Peter Dinklage, would you bend down for the picture or would you pretend like his height didn't matter? - Rap, 21  First of all, for those who don't know, this is Peter Dinklage. He's an actor who has appeared in a bunch of movies that I don't particularly care for, like Elf . . . No, he didn't actually play an elf. . . . Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian . . . where he played a short, blond Gimli  . . . and Underdog.  This movie sucks. Even though it has dogs in it. He is, however, best known for his role as Tyrion Lannister on HBO's Game of Thrones. Yeah. He's pretty cool. And HBO is definitely not replacing him with Professor Flitwick from Harry Potter ...

S05E01 - "First Day of Classes"

Image
I did some mental counting in my head and I decided that if each semester I've spent in Ateneo were a whole TV series season, then this one will have been my fifth, and today will have counted as Episode 1. But I should probably cut back on the TV series analogies. My life isn't nearly as interesting as Christine Campbell's . (That may or may not be a good thing. I don't know.)       Woke up bright and early and ate a breakfast consisting entirely of two Presto peanut butter cookies. I feel so healthy right now! NOT. But hey, at least I walked to my classroom! After taking a trike to JSEC. u_u          First class of the day was at 7:30, Cell Mol, which is short for Cellular and Molecular Biology. Our teacher seemed nice. She let us off "early" (i.e. at 10:30 instead of 11:30). After that I went with AC, Rap, Jules, and Deo to do the usual start-of-the-season errands... ID validation and the like.    ...

Box O' Rice

Image
To be honest, I don't even remember if it's called Box OF Rice, or Box O' Rice. I hope it's Box O' Rice. It just sounds cooler that way. But anyway. I went there last Friday for dinner, and it was my first time there. It's a cozy little place right next to my dorm, and they serve exactly what their name implies: boxes of rice. Boxes of rice with toppings, of course. Emphasis on the word "boxes." Which means there are no plates involved. Which means you can bring the boxes in and out of the store as you please. I should've noted this earlier, because I embarrassed myself at the counter, telling the cashier TWICE that I wanted my box of rice "to go." Durrr. Boxed na. To go pa. Anyway, the food itself is good, for P60-P70 priced meals. My only complaint is that their meat-to-rice ratio needs a bit more tweaking. There's just so much rice, and so little of anything else! That's Pinoy portioning for you. Actually, the store don...

on beauty

It's one of those days where I'm hating the TV for putting all these images in our heads and changing the way we understand "beautiful." i.e. Beautiful is being thin and having white skin. We see all these ads trying to sell us "fat eliminators", and drinks that supposedly help us burn fat faster. What disappoints me the most is this advertisement of a whitening lotion made for teens, because "if you start with white, you start right," or something like that. To those people who created that product AND ad I want to yell, "Back off, you jerks !" Beacause we teen girls don't need you to make us feel any worse about ourselves. Don't you think we've got enough problems to deal with already? Boys, school, hormones - and now you're adding to that list self-image ! Did you know that 92% of girls say they want to change at least one aspect of their physical appearance (with body weight ranking the highest)? Two thirds of wome...

random picture of a hologram of the day

Image
For those non GMA and ABS-CBN watchers, here's the situation as I know it: One of these stations got hold of this hologram-transmitting technology thingy, and then the other one got jealous and decided they needed one too. Which one of them got it first, I have no idea, but now the two stations fight about it ON AIR, showing it off and trying to see which station's is better. It gets SO annoying. Just give us NEWS already! (P.S. I advise you to click the picture for a larger and more hi-def version, and then right-click THAT and Save. In a few month's time, this picture of the hologram of the 15th Philippine President is going to be PRICELESS!)
