forgetting Wednesday

I'm too lazy to write anything right now. So, I'm filling this post up with pictures, pictures, and more pictures, and then a picture of an ice cream fish. Big, big thanks once again to the anonymous commenter who keeps on reminding me to update this thang. :) (Oh, and you can right-click any picture and open it in a new tab for a better view.)

. . .

It was Karl's 18th birthday, and classes were only until 9:30 in the morning. Karl was taking us all out to Yellow Cab in Katipunan. So, having two hours to kill before lunch, Block XX decided to hit the Ateneo Art Gallery in the old Rizal Library. We were greeted by an intriguing piece of art outside the building.
"Balete," by Leeroy New, located at the old libe. The "roots" reach all the way up to the third floor! (Also in this picture: the Manuel V. Pangilinan Center for Student Leadership, as seen in the back.)
. . .

Inside the library, we went to view an exhibit by artist Kiri Dalena entitled "Watch History Repeat Itself." The wing it was held in was all empty space and white walls except for a blinking orange neon sign that said "History." A few meters away from the sign lay a slab of marble on the floor, and etched into it were the words "WATCH HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF." If you stood behind that slab of marble, you could literally watch "History" repeat itself as the neon sign that said "History" blinked on and off. And, I'm sorry, I'm not an art critic. Neither am I capable of very deep thought. So I'll just shrug and tell you that I don't really know what that's supposed to represent. The poster at the entrance mentioned something about Cory Aquino's death. My friend Jeth said that it could be an allusion to Cory's death as a "repetition" of her husband Ninoy's, and Noynoy's replacing Gloria as a repitition of Cory replacing Marcos. But, I'll just leave it at that. Interpret at your own risk.

The next part of the exhibit featured another neon sign, this time, a sentence: "Dear activist, write me a slogan." Meters away, underneath a solitary ceiling light, there was a tall wooden stand displaying a small  yet very thick yellow book. On the cover, it says "Yellow Book of Slogans," and inside are various slogans and phrases pertaining to events in Philippine history.

On one wall of another bare room, some old footage of a student rally was projected. My friend Karlo says it's footage from the student's rally over at Polytechnic University of the Philippines, which would make sense, because the footage was of young people in uniforms throwing chairs and tables from the fourth floor of a building. At some point in the video, the footage is played backwards, and chairs and tables reassemble themselves from piles on the ground and start flying back up towards the hands that threw them. (We spent our time here mainly just making shadow puppets and dancing in front of the projector, pretending our shadows were at a club.)

The last part of the exhbit was this dark, all-black room that lit up with white light every few seconds. You had to actually go inside the room to see where the light was coming from: white neon signs along the top of the walls that said, "LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR LIAR" (Okay so I didn't actually count how many "LIAR"'s there were, but you get the drill.) According to the poster at front, this was a reference to Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's "Hello Garci" scandal.
Next, we moved to the opposite wing to view In the Eye of Modernity. Now I'm REALLY too lazy to write. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. So if you have any questions about the art, just tell me via the Comments link at the end of this post. I'm no art expert, but I would personally go back to the art gallery and check the description for you if you'd like.

I didn't post anything because I was too busy studying for this long test we had in Chemistry. That was last Tuesday, the day before all of this (refers to whole post) happened. :)

Also, nothing much happened those days that you'd want to hear about :))
