toy stores

In recent years, I've really come to hate toy stores. Yeah, you heard me right: I. Hate. Toy. Stores. It's not the toys I hate, it's the stores. Toy stores are so evil. And what's even more evil is that they probably don't realize how evil they are. I hate them because I think toy stores are largely responsible for perpetuating stupid gender stereotypes. Don't believe me? Check this out. I visited Toys R' Us in Robinsons Galleria the other day to shop for a gift for Rap's brother, Gabriel, and here's what I saw. Not many people will see anything wrong with this. So I must explain. The picture on top shows the signs marking the "boys' section" of the store, and the picture below shows the same for the girls'. Notice how the boys' section, which contains robots and daggers and arrows and rockets and even some really cool Adventure Time merch, is labelled "Action and Adventure." The girls' section, cont...

summer thoughts

Image
Judging by my Facebook and Instagram news feeds, #LaBoracay season seems to be coming to a close. The parties have ended, the beaches are emptying, bikinis are being tossed in the laundry, and social media is filling up with pictures of nearly naked boys and girls in their swimsuits. Yes yes, everyone is happy. Except me. Because I hate summer. Okay I don't hate summer. I like summer. But I really hate what summer does to people. To women, especially. Look. Summer is supposed to be a time for freedom. For the time being, you're free from lectures, homework, quizzes, tests. No more thesis. No more thesis adviser. You're free. You've got the time to go head out to the beach with your friends and chill out, and nobody has the right to waggle a finger at you and say, Hey, you crazy kid, you should be in school! Nope. Because there is no more school. Because it is summer. Rejoice, men and women of the world! Only, not really. Because when I'm scrolling through...

anime and feminism

WARNING: This post contains stuff that you probably will not be interested in unless you 1.) Watch Ouran High School Host Club and 2.) like half-baked feminist analyses of pop culture. Why why why WHY do I always get the urge to write a blog post just when I'm about to work on something important. I've got a Physiology mini-thesis review of related literature waiting to materialize in the adjacent browser tab, and it's due on Monday already, but DEAR LORD am I fired up and ready to write something completely unrelated on my blog. Maybe it's the coffee float I just ingested. I got if from Jolibee for an extra twenty five bucks, and its resemblance, in terms of taste, to Kopiko instant coffee is unignorable. Anyway, I'll stop the rambling and proceed with that thing that got me fired up in the first place - no, not coffee (well, it's partially that), but Ouran High School Host Club. If you are either Jules or Rap, I know what you're thinking: How unchar...

post V-day blogging

I'm writing from the libe right now, and this will be a short one since I'm just killing the time until I get my lab notebook back from... uh, being duplicated. Valentine's Day was yesterday, and I spent most of it with my beloved block. We had a picnic over at Cervini Field. There was delicious food (gummi bears! lime-flavored nachos! Alessi's wonderful chocolate wafers!) and beautiful music. Andy also gave all the XX girls beautiful roses! Thank you! Immediately after that, I worked on my friend's video and got frustrated because my output was crappy, and this time I couldn't blame the software I was using (previously: MovieMaker; currently: Adobe Premiere). Gahh. Which brings me to where I am right now, venting out my ~artistic frustrations~ on my blog. Hmmm. Lab notebook's not done being duplicated yet. So I shall tell you about a few more things: We were dismissed early for Filipino today so that we could take pictures around the campus of sce...
