looking in the mirror

I just watched the "Born This Way" episode of Glee and cried buckets. In the ending number, each glee club member wore a shirt that said what they hated most about themselves, and then I got to thinking that it must have taken a lot of the actors themselves to appear on television with these insecurities printed out for everyone to see (like Lea Michele, who wore a shirt that said "NOSE").

Personally, if I wrote up a list of things I hate about myself, I could come up with a book about as thick as Principles of General Chemistry. And that's very thick. But anyway, I'll name three, just off the top of my head.
Three things I'd love to love about myself: (picture taken right after crying buckets)
  1. Eyes (They're not equally sized, and I don't like the way they slant.)
  2. Chubby cheeks
  3. Crooked lips (seriously. they don't match up :|)

I remember the last time I was home, I was standing in front of a mirror and saying "I hate my face." My sister heard me and told me, "But God made that." Now I'd be a hypocrite if I said that next time we see something we don't like about ourselves, we should say something inspirational to ourselves like "God made this," or "I was born this way." Because sometimes we just can't help but wonder WHY God made us this way. WHY did  God gave me weird lips, and WHY couldn't God have given me a more symmetrical pair of kissers? Would it really have taken a lot more effort to push the upper lip slightly to the left???

My point is, it's really hard to love yourself completely, not despite your imperfections, but because of your imperfections. However, if there's one saying that helps me feel better in my bouts of self-loathing, it's this passage from Desiderata by Max Ehrmann
Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

  9. They don't actually hate the part about it, but they do feel insecure about it.
Just so you know, looks also help you find the right person, so that no matter how ugly you look (Actually you don't, it's just you who observes a lot about yourself), *insert forgotten lines here, srsly...
