Christmas 2015-2016

      I feel like I'm a little too old to be writing essays on "How I Spent My Christmas Vacation," but what the heck. This is 2016. Adult coloring books and hoverboards are real things grownups can own.

     Anyway. What I've been up to for the past couple of weeks, aside from mindlessly scrolling through Facebook:

  • Tried my hand at programming a choose-your-own story game using the Episode app. I found it to be really user-friendly! You can easily program your characters' behaviors, dialogue, and appearance. For my program, I chose to do an updated version of Splanchnic (too lazy to think up a brand-new story). Got too lazy to program the second episode though, so for now the game is stuck at the point before Elmer gets to the Spleen Department. 

  • Filling in the Secret Garden coloring book that Mai-mai got me for Christmas. At first it's pretty therapeutic, since all you really have to do is just scratch a colored pen in between some lines on paper. But after a while I get a little panicky because a certain color is off, or I didn't shade it in properly. Sometimes I get overwhelmed by the number of spaces I have yet to fill in. And yeah, I'm only on page one after all this time. Hmmm... pretty appropriate metaphor for med school. And life. 

  • Soaking in politics-related jibber jabber from friends and relatives. Seems like most of the people back home are in favor of Duterte. Personally I think Mar is the best bet for continuing the programs of the PNoy administration, but his terrible PR makes me think twice about giving him my vote. 

  • Spent a day in Kong Hua School. It was weird being back at the school I used to call my second home. I spent a good chunk of my life in that place, from kindergarten to high school. The same lot where I used to run and play with my classmates is the same lot where I would stand guard as a Rover Scout, looking out for the children who were running and playing. 

  • The reason I went back to school was to work on the batch yearbook with Jan, my high school classmate, and our former History teacher, Sir Kim. Yes, the 2009-2010 yearbook is still unfinished after all these years. My college yearbook got printed earlier. But on the bright side, it was a nice chance to catch up and gossip about what's become of my high school batch. P.S. The yearbook might be released this March, if all goes well.

  • I got a new bike for Christmas! I took it out for a ride the other day, thinking I'd re-learn how to bike by going around the block. But along the way I changed my mind and decided to head towards the Bulua bus terminal. I underestimated the distance and ended up biking for 8 km under the sweltering sun. When I got home I was super red and drenched in my own sweat. Good workout.

  • I signed up for Netflix the same day, thinking I'd try it out for a month (for free) and see if it's any good. Now I'm hooked to Jane the Virgin. Argh. So much feels :( I become all incoherent when I try to express my love for this show. I LOVE THIS SHOW. 

Okay, that's about all the updates I have for now. I DON'T WANT THIS VACATION TO END.

summer plans

I found out yesterday from Alessi that our last exam is on the 23rd! (Yeah, I haven't gotten around to checking the March calendar yet.) My flight's on the 26th (with Gerard! ), so that gives me three extra days of ~COMPLETE IDLENESS~ woohoo. So anyway. I'm really excited to go home. It's just two weeks though, and after that, TWO MONTHS of summer classes. Which means I'll have to fly all the way back to sweltering Manila to take up the TWO SUBJECTS that I and the rest of the Health Sci majors are required to take. Gahh. women superheroes

A lot of my close friends are boys. Boys who like comic books. I hang around them a lot, and usually we talk about random things like physics and foreigners and lobsters having no pain receptors. We went to watch The Amazing Spiderman on a whim just recently. It was fun. Sometimes it's not so fun. I used to get a lot of sandwich jokes until those stopped being funny. Now I get "d'oh you're a girl so of course you hate comic books" jokes. I don't hate comic books. I love Neil Gaiman's Sandman . And Walking Dead, too. And Scott Pilgrim!!! But I don't read superhero comics. It's hard to be interested in them when most, if not all, of the superhero women 1.) have gigantic breasts, 2.) wear sexy clothing, and 3.) are always in stereotypically feminine poses. What if the male characters posed like the female ones? (c) Kevin Bolk And look at that. Why can't the men wear clothes as revealing as the women, or women wear clothes as concealing...

Box O' Rice

To be honest, I don't even remember if it's called Box OF Rice, or Box O' Rice. I hope it's Box O' Rice. It just sounds cooler that way. But anyway. I went there last Friday for dinner, and it was my first time there. It's a cozy little place right next to my dorm, and they serve exactly what their name implies: boxes of rice. Boxes of rice with toppings, of course. Emphasis on the word "boxes." Which means there are no plates involved. Which means you can bring the boxes in and out of the store as you please. I should've noted this earlier, because I embarrassed myself at the counter, telling the cashier TWICE that I wanted my box of rice "to go." Durrr. Boxed na. To go pa. Anyway, the food itself is good, for P60-P70 priced meals. My only complaint is that their meat-to-rice ratio needs a bit more tweaking. There's just so much rice, and so little of anything else!
