design

I really like graphic design, even though I'm not very good at it. That's something I've only gotten the courage to say now. I like browsing through other people's works and figuring out for myself what looks good and what doesn't. One of my favorite things to do when I'm inspired is to put on some music and immerse myself in Photoshop. Sometimes I'm so absorbed in a specific project that I'll let an entire day pass before realizing how late it's gotten.

Unfortunately, I haven't been doing much design work outside my school requirements (like Global Health infographics) and Health Sci promos. That's why I want to devote the next two weeks to improving my style. By the way I feel really silly saying this as if I were a legit graphic designer. I can imagine my legit graphic designer friends looking at this post and scoffing at me. Pardon me, masters, for I am an eager n00b. Designing is just something I really enjoy doing, and I really want to get better at it.

Here are some things that I've already done, in order of doing.

These two "hunger" designs are for a Health Sci fundraiser. They were printed on shirts and then sold to the general populace. Unfortunately, they came out pink.
An ad for UBE Week, also courtesty of the Health Sciences Society. That logo in the corner was done by Todd Lazaro.
The front of the invitations for Health Sci Night 2013. The theme was Cirque Nouveau, so Chloe got the idea to make the invitations a knifeboard with a girl strapped to it. I cannot claim full credit for this though. I traced over stock photos as well as borrowed other people's pictures to use as textures. I hope to learn how to draw things in Photoshop when I take my Basic Design elective this semester.

I really like typography. I made this when I was inspired by a quote from my Theo teacher, Sir Lib.
I made this just a couple of hours ago because I wanted my cover photo on Facebook to match my profile picture. It doesn't. But whatever. I like using colors that pop, like these. When I work on Health Sci promos, I'm always inclined to use purple (the Health Sci color). This was a nice break from that. I'm sick of purple.

That's about it for now. Some of my much older stuff is here in my Tumblr blog, but it's not all graphic design (and it's not at all pretty). I shall have a better account of my birthday in my next post!

P.S. This post almost never got published because I'm shy about my work. Really.

  4. Hi Bea! I saw your tweet and I am sorry to admit this but I beg to disagree pertaining to what you said about the "oink oink" captions. I am one of those girls you're talking about who post food with a caption "oink oink" or not really exactly like that but something to that effect. And yes, you have a point that it sucks when girls like me do this because you're supposed to be enjoying food. Yes, there is nothing wrong to enjoy the food because it's one of the many proofs of God's generosity. But while enjoying the food, you should also MIND YOUR HEALTH. Enjoying your food does not mean EATING LIKE A PIG. Hence the captions relating to "oink oink".

I hope next time you will be EXTRA SENSITIVE about what you're saying. Who knows, maybe one of your friends or followers have eating disorders or eat like a pig? You never know. And as someone who cares, please take care of your health. From what I have been seeing here, you post a lot about food. Maybe you can consider eating less or doing some regular exercise so you can lose weight. It is for your own good. And especially medicine student ka, you should know about that. Check your BMI, darling.

Ayun lang noh. Please be careful on what you are saying always.

    1. Hello, Anonymous! Thank you for sharing this with me. It is a little weird though that your reply came in a blog comment instead of on Twitter. (For anyone who is reading this thread, the tweet that this person is referring to can be found here: https://twitter.com/aimlesstweeting/status/339339193035681792 )

I'm a little lost on what you are trying to say. At first it sounds as if you are an advocate of a balanced diet and good nutrition. If indeed that is what you are trying to say, then that is really great! I too wish good health on everybody. I am also thankful that you wish it on me.

But then you lose me when you talk about eating disorders or poor health. My tweet isn't a reference to either of those. What I meant to say (in 140 characters or less) was that enjoying your food does not make you a pig. I think that girls, more than guys, receive greater pressure to eat less. Indeed, countless ads have made us girls believe that it is shameful to enjoy our food. We have been tricked into believing that the "proper" relationship women must have with food is one of restraint and control. While I'm not saying that it's wrong to exercise control over what we eat, what I'm saying is that we should be able to enjoy eating without degrading ourselves or feeling like pigs.

Also, I am perfectly healthy, so I really don't know what's gotten your panties in a knot over my weight and such.

      Thanks for the comment.

    3. hey man that's not cool
also being fat =/= being unhealthy
please don't equate healthiness to your weight; there are thin people who are on unhealthy diets of coke and junk food and there are fat people who are vegetarians and eat salads. people's metabolisms work differently.
going back to the tweet, just because someone enjoys their food doesn't mean they're 'eating like a pig'. keep in mind that you're comparing a human being to an animal. do you find it okay that they're comparing people who eat a lot to pigs? what's wrong with eating a lot?
also please don't try to hide your blatant fatphobia under the guise of 'worrying for your health'.

have fun with your life, anon.

  5. P.S. Susan Bordo's "Hunger as Ideology" says a lot about food, media, and the female body image. You should give it a read. http://wikialli.pbworks.com/f/bordo.pdf

  6. Dear Anon,

I love how you are so up in arms in the defense of the use of "oink oink" for captions. You're like, "How dare she ruin my favorite thing to put as a caption on foods?!" It's really funny. Even funnier is how later on you use the phrase "eating like a pig" like it's the only way to describe overeating.

Anyways, I've been around the internet long enough to realize that anons are usually full of shit and like to act like they know a lot of things. For the benefit of everybody though, I just wanna point out that you do not. First of all, you do not know Aimee. Aimee's absolutely gorgeous just the way she is and you'd have to be blind not to know it. Second, she's very much aware of health issues and in case you didn't already know, she's a genius. Third, her tweet was offensive to no one, so what was the big fucking deal? Butthurt much? Fourth, just as Cait said, thin =/= healthy! Finally, you tell Aimee to be "EXTRA SENSITIVE" when you like to describe people that have eating disorders as "eating like pigs". What if Aimee had friends that have eating disorders and then they saw you describe their behavior as akin to pigs! Jesus "Look a hypocrite!" Christ! Get your head checked, lady!

And because I'm so fucking mature:
