language barriers, and second sem

Three days into the second semester and so far, so good! I haven't even stopped writing my novel. Yet. There's a research paper due two weeks from now :|

Our English and Lit professor is still Mr. Max Pulan, only this time, we're taking English 101 and Lit 14. Level ups! Yayz!

Speaking of profs, our Filipino teacher is Mr. Alywnn Javier - the author of Sa Victory Liner, the poem that Ren and I did a report on last sem! He seems like a cool guy, but I'm really scared of Filipino class now. I don't speak much Tagalog, and it was all cool in Mr. Devilles' class last sem, because even he spoke English here and then. While Mr. Javier also spoke English during our first meeting, he made it absolutely clear that he does not want us being conyo during his period. :-s Also, he said that he does not want students coming up to him "stupid" questions like what Huwebes means. When he said that, I swear that a tingle went down my spine. I was just about to ask Mico what Miyerkules was!

Gulp.

We are also going to be doing a lot of writing and - DOUBLE GULP - public speaking in Filipino. Aasofijw oej sfslk jfasl;fj awoe jaow jaslkf jasldk j

I remember that time Ren and I were reporting for Fil 11, I was speaking so much Taglish that I actually stopped and said, "Sorry, I'm so conyo." I have a feeling that if I pull that stunt again in Fil 12, my teacher's going to call me tanga, gago (gaga?) or some other Filipino word to that effect (I can think of only two more: bobo and mangmang).

Oh, by the way, I just want to point out a couple of things right here:

1. I'm from Cagayan de Oro.
2. Bisaya is the most commonly spoken language in my city.
3. Bisaya, Visayan, and Cebuano are essentially the same language.*
4. Just because it's called "Visayan" or "Cebuano" doesn't necessarily mean that people who speak Bisaya are from Visayas.
5. Cagayan de Oro is not in Visayas. It is in the northern part of Mindanao, and so is Iligan. General Santos and Davao are both in the southern parts of Mindanao.
6. Nobody from Block XX is from Visayas. NOBODY.

*Technically, Visayan is the umbrella word for all dialects spoken in Visayas, examples of which are Hiligaynon and Waray-Waray. Cebuano is the most widely spoken of the Visayan languages, and it also has the largest speaking population in the Philippines.
